How to Puppy-Proof Your Home
So you are bringing home the newest member of the family. Is the house ready for its arrival? There are several things that you need to consider to make sure that your house is a safe place for new puppy to live in. Just like tots, puppies are by nature curious and inquisitive, and won’t hesitate to try pulling or chewing at things to discover what they are all about. This is why puppy safety primarily requires puppy-proofing your home before the big arrival, from rolls of tissue to electric cords.
Active puppies can be cute to look at, when they are starting to discover things. Unfortunately, sometimes, the mischief becomes too much, especially if unwatched, to the point that it endangers puppy safety. As such, expert breeders and veterinarians usually recommend making sure that all potentially dangerous things—such as poisons and other hazardous furniture or fixtures—are out of the way.
One way to spot the potential hazards is to walk through all the rooms and portions of the house and try looking at every corner from a puppy or a tots’ perspective. You can get down on all fours for a better perspective of the floor, furniture corners, under the low tables and other areas that are otherwise out of reach. Also make sure to look inside closets or cabinets that puppies can get into. Watch out for possible causes of emergencies.
When considering puppy safety, it is also important to keep in mind that puppies explore things mostly using their mouths and teeth. By nature, puppies always get tempted to chew anything that they can bite. Sometimes, when the thing is small enough, they may even be tempted to swallow.
Some of the household things that are potentially hazardous and dangerous are electric cords. You will want to keep them out of reach to ensure puppy safety. Tuck electric cords up and into areas where puppies can’t reach them. You can secure them with duct tape on walls or underneath tables, making sure all the time that they are out of puppy’s way. An electric shock can be fatal for a small puppy, so watch out for dangling live wires most especially.
Also put away small objects that puppies can swallow and choke on. Pills and medicines should also be kept where they should be: inside locked medicine cabinets to ensure puppy safety.
The garbage can is another area that is most tempting to puppies. To keep them from ingesting household waste like stale foods, sharp cans and other poisonous substances that can be harmful to them and make them ill. Make sure to always secure the lid on your garbage can. Otherwise, place the can in a place where the puppy can’t reach it.
After puppy-proofing your house, the only thing that is left for you to do is to watch over the puppy to make sure it doesn’t stray to place where it should not be. This way, you can be sure to enjoy a long, rewarding life with your new puppy.
