Basics of Dog Health—What Every Responsible Owner Should Know

Dog health is something that should always be on your mind when you’re keeping a pet at home. It’s not enough to just provide meals for your pooch and a decent toilet space. Even guard dogs are treated with utmost care when it comes to dog health. Here’s every dog owner’s guide to keeping their pets healthy and happy.

Regular vet check ups

If you’re really concerned about dog health, you shouldn’t just visit your vet every time your pooch shows signs of being sick. Dog health should be checked at least every 3 to 4 months. For some owners, this can post as a great expense threat, but the truth of the matter is that you actually end up saving more money by checking on your dog health regularly than paying for complicated treatments when you’ve neglected your pet.

Vet visits are also great opportunities for you to consult about dog training, grooming, and diet problems. Most of the time, your dog’s health depends on how they’re treated, as a whole. If you’re feeding them pre-made dog food and your pet showed signs of discomfort or personality changes, your vet can pinpoint the reason why.

Grooming

Unlike common beliefs, grooming isn’t only important for fancy show dogs. Every pet needs to be groomed every once in a while. For long haired breeds, especially, dog health depends a lot on how well you’re able to maintain their fur. This means constant shampooing and trimming is necessary. Grooming your pet is important because it helps to protect them from getting infections.

Your pooch’s nails need to be trimmed regularly, and unless you’re an expert at trimming dog nails, this is really better left to the professionals. When you leave your dog’s nails untrimmed, it can curl over and cause their paws to get deformed. A lot aging dogs supper from paw problems just because their nails were unclipped for a very long time.

Have you ever tried putting on tight sneakers when your toenails are long? The discomfort that dogs feel when they’re walking on hard flooring with long nails is probably 10 times worse. You should be responsible dog owner and make sure that your pets are getting enough grooming attention.

Diet

When your pet is healthy on the inside, s/he is sure to be happy and healthy on the outside as well. If you must buy pre-made dog food for your pet, make sure that it’s only made by the most trusted companies. You should ask your vet for suggestions when it comes to dog food product because they’re the ones who actually know what your dog should eat.

If you can’t find the right pre-made dog food for your pooch, you should make the effort to prepare home made dog food for him/her. A lot of show dogs actually eat home made food because it’s fresher and healthier than most premade ones. If you’re ready to invest your time and energy on your dog’s health, ask your vet how you can prepare homemade meals for your pet.

Time and companionship

Dogs aren’t wired to be alone and neglected in a kennel. They’re pack animals, and unless they’re in the company of other dogs in the kennel, they’re bound to get pretty lonely in there. If you want a truly healthy dog, don’t give him/her reason to be depressed. Train, pet, and play with your pet as much as you can. After all, you got a dog primarily for companionship. Don’t tuck your pet away in a kennel as if s/he’s an inanimate object. Remember, dogs have feelings too.
